Children in Qatar face some of the world's most intense UV exposure. With a UV index regularly reaching extreme levels (10+) and outdoor activities, school sports, beach trips, and pool time filling children's schedules year-round, sun protection is not optional — it's one of the most important health habits parents can establish. Research shows that severe sunburns in childhood significantly increase the risk of melanoma in adulthood, making sun protection for children a long-term investment in their health.
Children's skin is thinner and has less melanin (natural UV protection) than adult skin. They are typically more active outdoors for longer periods. Children often don't feel the damage happening — a sunburn may not appear until hours after UV exposure. And the UV damage from childhood exposure accumulates silently for decades before manifesting as skin damage in adulthood.
Dermatologists and pediatricians generally recommend mineral sunscreens (zinc oxide and/or titanium dioxide) for young children (under 2 years, use ONLY mineral SPF per most guidelines). Mineral formulas sit on top of skin without absorption, reducing potential systemic exposure of chemical filter compounds in developing bodies. For older children, both mineral and modern chemical SPFs are considered safe.
SPF50+ is strongly recommended for children in Qatar's UV intensity. SPF30 provides 97% UVB protection; SPF50 provides 98%. In Qatar's extreme UV, every percentage point matters for extended outdoor exposure.
Ensure the product is labeled "broad spectrum" — protecting against both UVA (aging and deep skin damage) and UVB (burning). This is non-negotiable for Qatar.
Choose a water-resistant formula rated for 80 minutes for any pool or beach activity. Reapply after toweling dry regardless of the water-resistance claim.
Apply sunscreen 15–30 minutes before sun exposure. Cover all exposed skin — ears, back of neck, tops of feet, and shoulders are frequently missed. Use a generous amount — most people under-apply by 25–50%, significantly reducing effective SPF. Reapply every 2 hours, or immediately after swimming or excessive sweating. Make application part of the morning routine so it becomes habit.
Avoid peak UV hours (10 AM–4 PM) for outdoor play when possible. Use UPF50+ swimwear and rash guards for pool and beach. Wide-brim hats protect face, neck, and ears. UV-blocking sunglasses protect developing eyes from UV damage. Seek shade during the hottest part of the day.

For babies under 6 months, the AAP recommends avoiding sun exposure and using physical barriers (shade, clothing). From 6 months, mineral SPF50+ is appropriate. Always consult your pediatrician for babies under 1 year.
For older children, most adult mineral SPFs are suitable. Avoid fragranced or highly formulated adult products for very young or sensitive-skinned children.
